Diarrhea is most commonly caused by food borne-illness, viral infections, medications, stress or an underlying medical condition. Foods such as bananas, rice, applesauce, toast, herbal tea and yogurt are often used in hospitals to reduce diarrheal symptoms. If diarrhea symptoms persist or if you become dehydrated, contact your physician.

Fluids and Electrolytes

Diarrhea can lead to fatigue, dehydration and loss of essential electrolytes, so fluid replacement is extremely important in restoring hydration. Since sodium is also an important electrolyte in the body, eating some salty foods such as clear broth along with fluids can help the body restore balance. In severe dehydration, adding sports drinks such as Powerade or oral re-hydration solutions such as Pedialyte can help rehydrate the body more quickly.

Bananas and Applesauce

Bananas are rich in potassium, one of the electrolytes that regulate the body's hydration level. Bananas are easily digestible and a natural antacid that can neutralize stomach acid and soothe the lining of the stomach. The soluble fiber content of apples and bananas can help to firm loose stools and restore natural bowel function. Choosing a natural applesauce with no added sugar may produce the most beneficial improvement of diarrhea symptoms.

Toast and Rice

Bland starchy foods such as dry toast and plain white rice are easy to digest and can be good anti-diarrheal foods, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. Toast should be eaten dry with no butter, dairy or jams that could prolong upset stomach and diarrhea.

Yogurt

Yogurt products with live active cultures such as Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidus can provide friendly bacteria to the digestive system, helping to shorten the course of diarrhea. According to a 2008 study published in the "Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology," yogurt containing probiotic lactobacillus helped resolve moderate diarrhea in patients with HIV. This was the first medical study that showed the benefits of using yogurt to improve diarrhea symptoms. Opting for yogurt that does not contain any added sugar showed better results, as added sugar could prolong diarrhea.
