According to Peter J. D'Adamo, creator of the Blood Type Diet, people with both AB positive and AB negative blood are descended from prehistoric ancestors who lived between 10 and 12 centuries ago. D'Adamo contends that for AB blood type people to lose weight, increase their energy levels and experience better health and well-being, they need to eat specific foods. These foods, explains D'Adamo, contain lectin compounds that are compatible with their genetic inheritance as expressed by their blood type. MayoClinic.com warns there is no solid scientific evidence to support D'Adamo's AB blood type food recommendations. Consult your doctor before following any part of the Blood Type Diet.

Protein

D'Adamo says people with type AB blood have low levels of stomach acid and have trouble digesting and metabolizing meats like chicken, beef or pork. They should completely avoid all types of smoked and cured meats because these, according to D'Adamo, can give type AB people stomach cancer. Instead, AB blood type individuals should consume plenty of fish -- red snapper, salmon, rainbow trout, mahi mahi and tuna -- and meats like turkey, lamb and rabbit. They should also eat yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese and eggs though they should avoid milk. Beans like lentils, pinto beans and navy beans are recommended, as well as peanuts, walnuts and soy products like tofu.

Carbohydrates

People belonging to blood type AB should obtain their carbohydrates from cereals like rice bran, millet, oatmeal, oat bran, spelt, rice and breads prepared from sprouted wheat, soy flour and brown rice flour as well as Ezekiel and Essene bread. Rye, oat and rice flour can be used in baking and cooking. Once or twice weekly type AB people can consume barley, couscous, bulgur or quinoa. D'Adamo says they should strictly avoid corn and buckwheat as these may cause them to become hypoglycemic. Wheat products should be an occasional food because the inner wheat kernel is supposedly an acidic food for type AB people and will slow their metabolism.

Fruits and Vegetables

Type AB people should eat plenty of vegetables like beets, yams, eggplants, cucumbers and dark leafy greens like broccoli, collard greens, kale and mustard greens, according to the Blood Type Diet. AB individuals should choose alkaline fruit to neutralize any acid accumulating in the body from grains and should eat fruit separately from other foods, preferably at least an hour before or after meals. Alkaline fruits include any type of plum or grape, kiwi, grapefruit, cranberries, cherries, pineapple and lemons. Type AB people should strictly avoid tomatoes.

Spices, Beverages and Oils

D'Adamo advises that the best spices and seasonings for type AB people to use are curry, parsley, horseradish, miso and garlic, while allspice and all types of pepper -- black, cayenne, white and red flake -- should be strictly avoided. Coffee, green tea and fresh juice from lectin-compatible fruits and vegetables are the preferred beverages, though wine and beer are allowed occasionally. Olive oil should be used for cooking and in salad dressings; corn, sunflower and sesame oil should be avoided.
