Refining cane sugar into white sugar leeches out all of the nutrients. Molasses is the byproduct of sugar refining, containing the lost vitamins. One tablespoon of molasses has 20 percent of your daily intake of iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium. Because of its bittersweet quality, use care when substituting it for other sweeteners. Molasses works well in barbecue sauce, baked beans and gingerbread cookies.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Thoroughly grease the bread pan with butter.

Step 2

Mix the bread mix, baking soda and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, stir the molasses and buttermilk together.

Step 3

Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Pour the batter into the bread pan.

Step 4

Bake your bread for about an hour. Test the bread by inserting a toothpick into the center of the loaf. When the toothpick comes out clean, remove the bread from the oven. Cool the pan on a rack for 15 minutes before removing the loaf.

Tips and Warnings
