It is very important to maintain correct technique throughout all exercises. Not only does this ensure you are doing the exercise correctly, you will also reduce your risk of injuring yourself and others. Performing an exercise correctly means using proper technique and also breathing correctly. A dumbbell curl is very simple to perform because it involves a very small movement.

Technique

During a biceps curl, it is important to keep your elbow at your side. The dumbbell should be grasped in a supinated grip; with your palm facing forward. When you perform a dumbbell curl, you have the option of standing or sitting. Both exercises require the same technique because it is essentially the same motion. While ensuring that your elbows stay at your side, you also must focus on keeping your forearm vertical at the conclusion of the curl.

Breathing

During any weight-training exercise, it is important to breathe correctly. During the lifting phase, you should exhale. When you lift the weight during a biceps curl, simply exhale slowly. When you slowly bring the dumbbells back to the starting position, you should inhale.

Variations of Dumbbell Curls

There are a few different ways you can perform a dumbbell curl. Aside from standing or sitting, you can choose to work on one arm at a time, or do both at once. While performing these different variations, be sure that you are remaining upright with a neutral spine. If you are working on one arm at a time, be sure you are not leaning to either side.

Muscles Worked

During a biceps curl, the main muscle being worked is the biceps. With correct form, this is the primary muscle that should be worked.
