Xango juice contains mangosteen, a fruit native to Southeast Asia. Heavily hyped as a miracle food that can address a wide range of ailments, it has become a multilevel marketing product. According to Drugs.com, xango juice has exhibited anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antihistamine properties. But a lack of studies in humans makes it difficult to know if it would actually provide any therapeutic value. Like many fruits and vegetables, it is rich in a variety of healthful nutrients but whether it would help treat an existing health condition remains unclear. The Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings to Xango and other manufacturers of mangosteen supplements for making unproven claims about the health benefits of their products.
The University of Michigan Health System notes mangosteen products might interfere with the actions of chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments. If undergoing treatment for cancer, always talk to your doctor before taking nutritional supplements in any form. You might not need to forgo mangosteen juice altogether, but your doctor might recommend timing your intake of it based on your treatment schedule.
High Sugar Content
Mangosteen has high sugar content. If you have diabetes, consuming large amounts might negatively impact your blood sugar.
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center notes a case report of severe lactic acidosis in a man consuming mangosteen juice daily for 12 months. Lactic acidosis results when lactic acid builds up to excessive levels in the body. This condition has the potential to cause serious health problems like irregular heart beat and other heart problems and organ failure. Symptoms include muscle pain, numbness in the extremities, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, weakness and dizziness.
Other Safety Concerns
Whether you can safely consume mangosteen juice or supplements while pregnant or breastfeeding has not been established. If you have liver or kidney disease, always clear the use of any supplements with your doctor as these organs have a particularly sensitivity to what you put in your body, especially when operating in a diseased state.
