Kindergarten is a time for developing basic skills and knowledge that can last a lifetime. While most of the learning occurs in the classroom, there is another opportunity for learning the basic fundamentals in sports, such as basketball. Teaching basketball to kindergarten students requires patience so the kids have fun while learning basic skills.

Step 1

Keep it fun during the practices and games. Don't focus on winning or losing, but rather on developing basic basketball skills for every player.

Step 2

Teach basic athletic and movement skills, such as running, jumping, skipping, lateral shuffles and squatting. These skills transfer to other sports and activities in everyday life.

Step 3

Start with basic layups before progressing to jump shots for lessons on basic form. Focus on close-range shots along with general technique, such as squaring up to the basket and proper follow-through after the shot.

Step 4

Practice ball-handling skills with dribbling and passing drills. Use both the left and right hands during dribbling drills and focus on the basic chest, bounce and overhead passes.

Step 5

Adjust the skills and drills according to the learning curve. Each kindergartner may have a specific learning curve. The drills should coincide with ability level.
