Caffeine is directly linked to bladder irritation. Though most can consume caffeine with no problem, some may experience irritation, pain, and even infections of the bladder. For others, the caffeine can make certain urinary conditions even worse. If you think your bladder irritation is caused by caffeine, stop consuming it and see a doctor for a thorough evaluation.

Caffeine and Its Sources

Caffeine is found in coffee beans and cocoa beans, as well as tea leaves. It's added synthetically to some products like pain killers and sodas. Caffeine acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system, making you feel more alert, awake and energized.

Overactive Bladder and Cystitis

In some cases, consuming caffeine can irritate your bladder and cause certain conditions to spring up like an overactive bladder or interstitial cystitis. The latter is a form of chronic bladder infection that can cause bladder pain, urinary frequency and urgency. Likewise, if you already have these conditions, caffeine can make your symptoms worse and more difficult to deal with.

The Role of Quantity

If you suffer from bladder irritation following caffeine consumption, the problem may not be the caffeine itself. Rather, it may just be the quantity of caffeine you're taking in. According to a study published in the Journal of Urology, women that had over 450 mg of caffeine a day were much more likely to suffer from a bladder irritation like incontinence. Reducing caffeine intake or eliminating it dramatically improved symptoms of sufferers.

Symptom Reduction

Cut back on how much caffeine you consume each day. Watch for the various sources you could be getting it from. Coffee and tea are the most likely, but pain relievers and cold medicines have it, too. Opt for decaf when you can, but remember that decaf still has some caffeine in it and if you have a very sensitive bladder, you could still suffer from some irritation.
