You don't have to look very hard to find caffeine. It's included in numerous products like coffee and tea and it's added to supplements, pain relievers and energy drinks as well. Though most people don't notice much of a problem when consuming caffeine, others may experience side effects like digestive problems.

Stomach Irritation

Caffeine can irritate your stomach, especially if you consume a lot or have a cup of coffee on an empty stomach. According to the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, caffeine can increase acid production in the stomach, leading to pain and other problems.

Ulcers

With increased acid production, there is an increased likelihood of developing peptic ulcers. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, sources of caffeine like coffee can cause ulcers to form in the stomach lining.

Indigestion

Caffeine alone doesn't usually cause indigestion or acid reflux, but drinks like coffee and soda, which are very acidic, can cause these conditions to develop or worsen your symptoms says the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse.

Elimination Problems

Consuming too much caffeine or any at all if you have a sensitivity to it can cause problems with elimination like constipation and diarrhea. According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, the diuretic properties of caffeine can cause your body to become dehydrated, which can lead to constipation.
