Preventing the right shoulder from dipping in the golf downswing is critical to success. The role of the right shoulder during that portion of the swing is to roll under as the left shoulder turns upward. Learn to maintain the proper sequence in the downswing and you can eliminate the right shoulder dip, keeping it in the proper position.

Step 1

Practice swinging your 7-iron with a stop at the top of the backswing. Concentrate on finishing the backswing with a flex of your left hip and thigh muscle. Repeat this process until you consistently feel the left leg established as a solid post for your downswing.

Step 2

Add the downswing element to your practice swings. Initiate the downswing with the hips, allowing them to unwind before the shoulders start their downward move. Repeat practice swings until you can consistently initiate the downswing with the movement of the hips.

Step 3

Hit balls with the proper sequence of release in the downswing, rotating around your core. Swing at a comfortable speed, seeking to make solid contact rather than gain distance.

Tips and Warnings

  • Encouraging the proper downswing sequence, along with rotating around your core, will help to maintain the proper shoulder orientation throughout and avoid the fat shots that typically come as the result of a dipped left shoulder.
