In ancient times, wrestlers wore loin cloths, underwear similar to those worn by sumo wrestlers or absolutely nothing. The lack of clothing was considered a benefit since it would make it more difficult to grab someone if he wasn't wearing much or any clothing. With time, wrestling wear has progressed to include a wide range of clothing and accessories, including singlets, tights, wrestling shoes, socks, tops, bottoms, headgear, protective pads and more.
Step 1
Wear a singlet or lycra-type shirt and shorts. The singlet is a one-piece, form-fitting compression wrestling uniform that makes it difficult for your opponent to grab at your clothing.
Step 2
Choose whether you want to wear tights underneath the singlet.
Step 3
Wear wrestling shoes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association says that wrestling shoes must be heelless and must reach the ankle. Tie your shoes securely.
Step 4
Wear protective gear, including ear protectors, head gear, mouth guard, knee pads.
Step 5
Wear an anklet. Provided by the location where the wrestling match is held, an anklet acts as an identification marker for each wrestler. These anklets are different in color.
Tips and Warnings
- Wrestlers who have long hair may have to either braid their hair or wear a hair cover.
- Stopping to tie your shoelaces during a match may result in a stalling violation. Ensure that your shoes as well as other clothing and accessories are secure prior to the match.
