The Borden Method for weight loss began in the 1970s, using a combination of hypnotherapy and acupuncture to aid in weight loss. The goal of these treatments is to help people reach personal goals and live a healthy, happy life. Speak to your doctor before using this method, as it is considered a form of alternative medicine.

History

Charles Borden, creator of the Borden Method, began his hypnotherapy practice in 1974. The Borden Method, developed by Charles, is a four-step process to jump-start your weight loss. His son, also named Charles Borden, began his practice alongside his father in 1983 and later opened a new practice in the San Diego, California area. Charles Senior's daughters, Adrienne and Gail, also followed in their father's footsteps, both becoming hypnotherapists. In 2002 the sisters created the Borden Wellness Center, offering a combination of hypnotherapy and acupuncture to help people achieve their personal goals, one of which being weight loss.

Develop a Mental Image

Borden believes visualizing brings you great success on your weight-loss journey. He recommends taking a few minutes out of your hectic life to relax and visualize yourself as you want to be. Closing your eyes, you take three deep, slow breaths to create an imaginary photograph. No matter what situation you see yourself in -- work, family picnics or watching television -- see yourself as a thin, healthy person. You can create imaginary videos of yourself, or pretend to see yourself outside of your body. No matter how you do this, the key is to see yourself as thin.

Reduce Your Stress Levels

Borden reports that 70 percent of people at his seminars report stress as one reason they overeat. He recommends using exercise as a way to relieve your stress. Finding ways to simplify your schedule can also help. Formal relaxation techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing or yoga, may also benefit you and your weight loss.

Enjoy Physical Activity

Exercise is crucial for weight loss, but you will only succeed and adhere to your exercise routine if you like what you do. If you find the treadmill is dull, try walking in an area surrounded by flowers. Perhaps dance is more your cup of tea. Whatever you choose, make sure it is an activity you look forward to each day.

Eat Slowly

Eating slowly helps you eat less. The area of your brain stimulated by chewing, tasting, smelling and swallowing, is near the base of your brain. The slower you eat, the more time you give this area time to experience satiety. Borden also points out that both France and Japan have low obesity and heart disease rates. Not only do they take time to enjoy their food, they also have diets rich in fresh food and produce, leaving the fast food chains behind.
