The key to comfortable snowboarding is to dress appropriately. Too cold and you'll have a hard time moving around. Too hot and you'll start sweating after a couple of times down the mountain. In either case, you might end up getting sick. You can solve this problem by dressing in layers. This way you can take off a piece of clothing if you get too warm and put it back if you get cold.

Step 1

Start with a thermal base layer. Long underwear or simply a long-sleeved T-shirt, depending on the overall temperature that day, will do. Choose a synthetic material that won't absorb sweat, but instead move it away from your body to keep it dry. Materials such as polypropylene are a good choice.

Step 2

Add a second layer for warmth. Fleece, wool or other winter clothing material is fine. Don't choose anything too bulky, since that might restrict movement when snowboarding. This insulating layer can be a sweater or a jacket, or it can be both, depending on the temperature. Avoid cotton, which gets wet easily and retains moisture.

Step 3

Finish with an outer waterproof layer. This layer is not so much to provide warmth as it is to protect the rest of your clothing from getting wet in the snow. Professional snowboarding clothing is made with breathable material, which provides ventilation without letting water get in. Cheaper options include nylon jackets and pants with ventilation zippers under the arms.

Step 4

Add accessories as needed. A hat and gloves are essential to prevent the heat from escaping from your body. The gloves should have a tight cuff to prevent the snow from getting in.

Step 5

Wear safety gear, especially if you're a beginner. Goggles will protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays, while a snug helmet will keep you safe in case you fall. Wrist guards and knee and shin guards are a good idea for children or when you snowboard in uneven terrain.
