Are There Negative Side Effects for Digestive Enzymes?

Digestive enzyme supplements are prescribed for individuals who do not make sufficient enzymes required to digest food. Certain conditions may affect the body's ability to produce digestive enzymes, such as cystic fibrosis, or if part of the pancreas is removed due to cancer or other disorders. These patients often require digestive enzyme replacement as well, since the pancreas isn't able to produce enough digestive enzymes to properly break down food. Like other medicine and supplements, patients may experience side effects when taking these enzymes.

Allergic Reactions

Some people may experience an allergic reaction to digestive enzymes. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the face, throat, lips and tongue. Such swelling would make breathing difficult or impossible in some situations. If you begin to experience these symptoms, you should call emergency help immediately. Hives, or a rash, is also a sign of an allergic reaction.

Change in Bowel Habits

When taking digestive enzymes, you may experience a change in your normal bowel habits. For some individuals, these enzymes correct the problem of diarrhea caused by the body's inability to digest fats. In other people, the enzymes may actually cause diarrhea, especially if they are used incorrectly, or if the dosage is wrong. They may also lead to constipation as well.

Nausea and vomiting

Digestive enzymes can cause nausea and vomiting in some people. If you experience these side effects, it may be necessary for your doctor to adjust your dose, or for you to change the way you take them. The enzymes should be taken with food, not before meals, or after meals. Taking them at the wrong time can worsen side effects.

Gas, Bloating and Stomach Cramps

Other stomach discomforts such as gas, bloating and cramping may occur in patients who take digestive enzymes. As the enzymes begin to work within the digestive tract, each person may react to the enzymes differently, causing these side effects in some people. Gas, bloating and stomach cramping may vary in severity. If these side effects disrupt your daily life and activities, you should speak with your doctor.

Serious Side Effects

Digestive enzymes have some rare, though serious side effects that may occur while taking them. If you develop blood tinged, or bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea that will not go away, you should contact your doctor immediately. Very black and tarry looking bowel movements are also an indicator of a serious reaction. Some people may experience swelling and pain in their joints as well. Call your doctor promptly if you experience any of these side effects.
