Bladder infections, which also can be termed urinary tract infections, cystitis or UTIs, are painful, inconvenient bacterial infections of the bladder. While bladder infections do require the care of a doctor, enjoying a refreshing glass of pomegranate juice may help prevent bladder infections and fight off the symptoms of an existing infection. Always consult your doctor prior to using pomegranate juice for a bladder infection.

Bladder Infections

Bladder infections can be caused by bacteria entering any portion of your urinary system, including your urethra, ureters, kidneys or bladder. These infections can be caused by holding your urine for too long, being female, being sexually active, having diabetes, being pregnant or having multiple sex partners. Symptoms of a bladder infection can include abdominal pain, the frequent urge to use the rest room, voiding a little at a time, pain or burning during urination, chills, nausea or fever. A trip to your doctor is necessary for treatment of a bladder infection. A urine sample, physical exam and medical history helps to confirm your condition. An antibiotic is usually prescribed to help fight your bladder infection.

Pomegranate Juice

The bright, reddish berry that is the pomegranate contains antioxidants as well as vitamin C. Antioxidants can help to prevent bacteria from attaching itself to the tissue that composes the lining of your bladder. The vitamin C content of pomegranate juice also contains properties that can be beneficial for bladder infections. Vitamin C is a vitamin known for boosting your immune system. This can help you to fight off and prevent bladder infections. Many of the fruits that contain vitamin C also are very acidic. These acidic properties help to increase the acidity of your urine. Bacteria does not thrive well in an acidic environment.

Fluids

In addition to an antibiotic, your doctor is likely to recommend that you drink plenty of fluids while fighting off a bladder infection. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates you should consume six to eight glasses of water daily while you have a bladder infection. An antioxidant-rich juice, such as pomegranate or cranberry juice, is an acceptable supplement for water. Staying hydrated with a bladder infection is important. Drinking plenty of fluids can help to dilute your urine. Diluted urine causes less pain and burning during urination. Fluids also help to flush bacteria out of your urinary system by causing you to urinate more frequently.

Considerations

No research has been conducted on the proper amount of pomegranate juice to be consumed to prevent or to help lessen the symptoms of a bladder infection. However, pomegranate juice has properties very similar to cranberry juice. The University of Michigan Health System indicates that you should consume 4 to 10 oz. of cranberry juice daily during a bladder infection. Cranberry juice should be a regular part of your diet if you suffer from recurring bladder infections. Pomegranate or cranberry juice are not a substitute for receiving medical care if you suspect a bladder infection.
