Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which pressure on the median nerve causes pain, weakness, tingling or numbness in your hand and fingers. You are more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome if you perform repetitive motions of the hands and wrist such as typing or working on a computer. Vitamin B-6 supplements may help improve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Consult your doctor before taking vitamin B-6 supplements.
Vitamin B-6
Vitamin B-6, also known as pyridoxine, is a water-soluble nutrient that helps maintain proper nerve function. Some researchers suggest that large doses of vitamin B-6 may help relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. They recommend taking 100 to 200 mg of vitamin B-6 to treat carpal syndrome. Large doses of vitamin B-6 can be harmful. Consult your doctor before taking over-the-counter vitamin B-6 supplements.
Symptoms
Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome usually start gradually. You may experience frequent pain in the arm or finger; burning; and tingling or numbness in your hands and fingers, especially the thumb, index and middle fingers. Initially, the symptoms occur at night. As the disease progresses, you may experience tingling during the day. Other symptoms include hand weakness, weak grip, difficulty performing manual tasks and wasting of the muscle at the base of the thumb.
Supplements
The doctor may recommend that you take vitamin B-6 supplements to prevent symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Vitamin B-6 supplements are available in regular and extended-release tablets. Do not chew or crush extended-release tablets. Avoid taking over-the-counter B-complex vitamin supplements together with vitamin B-6 individual supplements as this may cause an overdose. Follow the directions from your doctor and pharmacist.
Side Effects
When taking vitamin B-6 supplements, you may experience common side effects such as upset stomach, dizziness, headache and weakness. Consult your doctor if these side effects persist. Adverse effects of vitamin B-6 include numbness, decreased sensation to touch, poor coordination and excess fatigue and allergic reactions, according to Drugs.com. Stop taking vitamin B-6 and seek immediate medical attention if you experience allergic reaction symptoms such as chest pain, difficulties breathing, swelling of your face and hives.
