Estrogen is a hormone that elicits the production and balance of the female reproductive system, according to the National Cancer Institute. Most of the hormone is produced by your ovaries but the adrenal glands and other organs also secrete estrogen. Too much of this hormone can increase your risk of uterine and breast cancer and too little can increase your risk of osteoporosis and infertility. Prescription replacement hormone is generally used to treat an imbalance of estrogen. Additionally, certain herbs may help restore estrogen balance in your body. Check with your doctor before using any herbal supplement.

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is an herb traditionally used to treat symptoms related to menopause. These symptoms, which include hot flashes and night sweats, are attributed to rapid fluctuations in hormones, including estrogen. The National Institutes of Health explain that the administration of black cohosh is associated with a reduction in hot flashes, anxiety and night sweats although the exact mechanism behind the association is unknown. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, have a history of liver problems or family history of breast cancer, avoid using black cohosh.

Dong Quai

Dong quai is a root-based herb that is frequently used in Asian medicine to treat problems in the female reproductive system. Additionally, the University of Maryland Medical Center explains that dong quai, also referred to as the "female ginseng" is used to treat menstrual problems that can be caused by an estrogen imbalance. If you're experiencing painful uterine cramping, dong quai may also help to relax the muscles of your reproductive system and relieve spasms. Dong quai can increase your sensitivity to sunlight, so use sunblock if you are taking this herb. Additionally, avoid dong quai if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

Red Clover

Red clover, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, contains phytoestrogens which are chemicals that act like estrogen in your body. These chemicals, also known as isoflavones, may be helpful in reducing symptoms of menopause caused by fluctuations in estrogen. Research supporting this use is mixed; however, some women claim that they experience relief of menopause symptoms such as hot flashes when taking red clover. Red clover is considered relatively safe to use but should be avoided if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.

Licorice

Unlike the candy of the same name, the herb licorice is used to treat inflammation, bronchial conditions and symptoms of menopause. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center explains that licorice contains substances that can modulate estrogen receptors in your body. If you are experiencing symptoms of an estrogen imbalance such as hot flashes, licorice may help restore the balance and decrease these symptoms. When choosing a licorice extract, purchase one that specifically states it contains deglycyrrhizinated licorice, which has less adverse effects than licorice that contains glycyrrhizin.
