Native Americans used slippery elm both topically and internally to promote wound healing and reduce various types of inflammation. According to Drugs.com, it was used to treat urinary tract infections and general inflammation occurring in the urinary area. Slippery elm has not been studied extensively in clinical trials and for this reason, definitive dosing guidelines do not exist on specific conditions. Some general dosage suggestions exist, based on traditional use. If you have an interest in using natural treatments to treat your urinary tract infection, consider consulting with a health care professional well-versed in alternative medicine.

Suggested Dose in Tea Form

Slippery elm comes in several forms, including a tea. If using this form, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends boiling 4 g of powdered bark in 16 oz. of water and drinking 3 cups per day. The University of Michigan Health System notes a suggested intake of 1.5 g to 2 g boiled in 6 oz. of water two to four times a day.

Other Dosage Guidelines

If you want to experiment with slippery elm in other forms, try a 5 mL tincture three times a day and capsules at 400 mg to 1,000 mg three to four times a day. Only use one form at a time.

Interactions

Slippery elm does not have any documented medication interactions. Its coating properties, however, could delay absorption of oral medications and supplements. Drink the tea two hours before or after taking these other treatments.

Other Considerations for Use

Slippery elm was once used to induce abortion and the outer bark does contain components believed to cause this effect. Even though preparations come from the inner bark, it is prudent to avoid slippery elm if pregnant. Use is also contraindicated if you are breast feeding.
