The United States consumes more ice cream than any other nation, according to the Ice Cream Retailer's Association in 2007. Americans' love affair with variety and convenience may be a factor. The easiest dessert involves a bowl, a spoon, an ice cream scooper and a container of the frozen confection. Taking it one step further with a flavoring, such as adding an infused olive oil, provides more options to enjoy.

Infused-Oil Flavors

An infused oil provides the essence of a spice, herb or flavoring that can be used to enhance desserts, including ice cream. Ice cream is a particularly appropriate palette for infused oil, because many of its flavors are simple and carry toppings effectively. Some flavors that complement ice cream include lavender, ginger, cayenne, white truffle, chocolate, almond and coffee.

Preparation

Preparing infused oil at home is a relatively simple process involving heating olive oil in a saucepan with the flavoring ingredient for approximately 10 minutes at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. When the infusion is completed, the oil stands at room temperature until cooled and is ready for serving the following day after the flavors distribute. Use light olive oil, not extra virgin, because the flavor is neutral.

Purchasing

Purchasing premade infused olive oils is another method. Gourmet markets and specialty shops frequently carry white truffle, chocolate, chile pepper and citrus oils. Finding other oil varieties may require shopping online or special ordering from a local vendor.

Serving

The process for serving flavor-infused oil with ice cream involves matching or complementing the flavors in the preceding courses. If the dining experience follows a theme, such as a thread of tropical flavors, a pineapple, mango or cayenne-infused oil may be appropriate. A celebratory or intimate meal may follow with a chocolate or lavender themed dessert. To serve, simply drizzle the oil over immediately after the ice cream is scooped out.
