Side Effects of Temazepam

Temazepam is a benzodiazepine medication prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. It is generally taken on a short-term basis. When discontinued after a long-term period of use, the dosage must be slowly decreased to avoid medical complications. Do not take more medication than prescribed and do not take while pregnant. Report side effects to your physician. Temazepam is a controlled substance commonly sold under the trade name Restoril.

Central Nervous System Side Effects

Temazepam may cause drowsiness, depression, lethargy, fatigue, apathy, disorientation, sedation, light-headedness, confusion and restlessness. Some patients will feel overstimulated from taking this medication. Less common central nervous system side effects include visual disturbances such as double vision, burning eyes, visual hallucinations and involuntary eye movements and hearing disturbances such as auditory hallucinations and not hearing well. The patient should be monitored for odd behavior such as not moving around or not talking as much as usual. With long-term use, you may become physically or psychologically dependent on the drug.

Rarely, it may cause your blood pressure to become too high or too low, a sensation of your heart beating fast in your chest, swelling of your extremities or your cardiovascular system to collapse. It may affect the chemistry of your blood and, with long-term use, can cause your hematocrit level to drop.
