While most people experience headaches periodically throughout their lives, those with intense pulsating or throbbing headaches may be suffering from migraines. These severe headaches are often accompanied by vomiting, nausea and sensitivity to sound and light. The Mayo Clinic reports migraines can be treated withh prescription medications. Additional treatment with natural supplements, such as fish oil, may be beneficial for migraine sufferers.
Fish Oil
The primary active compounds in fish oil include docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, two different omega-3 fatty acids. The Mayo Clinic reports that these compounds have been proven to help lower blood pressure, hinder the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaque within the arteries, and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. To enjoy these health benefits, you need to consume fish oil supplements or foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, as the body is unable to make this vital compound.
Fish Oil and Migraines
The National Headache Foundation cites a study performed by the University of Cincinnati where 15 patients were given either fish oil or a placebo oil for a total period of 15 weeks. Upon the completion of this study, researchers found nine participants experienced a significant decrease in the frequency and severity of their migraines, and when migraines did occur the nine participants noted the severity of the migraines were reduced by 40 to 50 percent. While further studies are required to determine the true effectiveness of fish oil on migraines, the preliminary findings are promising.
Dosage
While exact dosage of fish oil should be prescribed by your doctor, the Mayo Clinic recommends consuming 1.6 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day and eating fish two times a week.
Warnings
Fish oil is not the same as cod liver oil. Cod liver oil contains a high concentration of vitamin A, and if this supplement is consumed at the same rate as fish oil, toxicity may occur. While fish oil is generally considered safe for adults, some of the more common side effects associated with this supplement include mild rash, back pain, gastrointestinal discomfort and unpleasant breath or tastes in the mouth. If you develop symptoms such as irregular heart rhythm, fever, chills or chest pain immediately discontinue use and seek emergency medical help.
