Kaivalyadhama started in 1924 in a bungalow by Swami Kuvalayananda. Kuvalayananda was a student of Paramahamsa Madhavadas Maharaj, one of the first yoga teachers. The poses practiced in Kaivalyadhama are from the Ashtanga yoga philosophy, but also incorporate methods of natural health.
The Center
The Kaivalyadhama center is located in a city called Lonavla, in the state of Maharastra, in the western part of India. Located on 80 acres of land, the center has four main buildings, including a yoga hospital and a research center. Kaivalyadhama means "the abode for the yogi who has reached the ultimate step." The center also conducts yoga teacher training courses and workshops.
The Founder
Kuvalayananda opened the center to share the teachings of his teacher. He was also a poet and a scholar of the Indian language Sanskrit. Kuvalayananda had most students start in Lotus pose because it he believed it was the best position from which to breath. Kuvalayananda died in 1966.
Yoga Research
Kuvalayananda was a scientific thinker. He wanted to prove things before he believed them. This was the case for him even with yoga. So at the Kaivalyadhama center, Kuvalayananda started a research center to prove the health benefits of yoga. The research center at Kaivalyadhama has been conducting research for more than 75 years, publishing studies in India's magazine "Yoga Mimamsa."
Yoga Therapy Postures
At the Kaivalyadhama center, disorders are treated with "Yoga Therapy," a method used to keep the body healthy by building an effective resistance system and creating balance in the body. It incorporates the 40 postures included in the Ashtanga yoga series, breathing exercises and meditation. Over time, with regular practice, yoga therapy can bring greater awareness to your body, helping you achieve optimal health.
