1. A Tibetan Treasure
Goji berries, often called wolf berries, are grown in the nutrient rich soils of Tibet, Mongolia and China and have been used for more than 6,000 years by Tibetan herbalists. These special berries, which are so treasured in Tibet that celebrations are held in their honor for two weeks at the end of each year, are thought to protect the liver, increase circulation, improve fertility, support the immune system, promote longer lifespan and more. In fact, it is commonly said in Tibet that eating Goji berries in the morning will keep you smiling the entire day.
2. A Benefit You Can See
Goji berries are among the few foods that prevent vision loss, as they are rich in zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that absorbs blue light to protect the retina of the eye. Eating goji berries and in turn increasing your intake of zeathanthin may even decrease the chances of macular degeneration, which is the number one cause of partial or complete vision loss in those over 65.
3. Stopping Cancer Cells in Their Tracks
Goji berries are among the foods richest in antioxidants, which are known for their cancer-fighting properties. Several tests have shown that goji berries and their extracts can prevent and even reduce the growth of cancer cells. Additionally, adding goji berries to your daily diet during traditional cancer treatment may increase healing. While tests have been performed using goji berries and extracts, it is not guaranteed that teas or juice will have the same anti-cancer properties.
4. A Berry Good Snack
Adding goji berries to your daily diet is simple and delicious. Dried goji berries, which have a wonderful sweet-and-sour taste, may be the best method of introducing them to your diet. Add the berries to your morning cereal or to trail mixes or add them to your favorite soups and salads. Additionally, you can place a handful of berries in a bottle of water and snack as your sip or use them in when making bread, cookies, nut bars or other baked goods.
5. Natural Blood Thinners
Goji berries are a natural blood thinner, meaning they can help to reduce blood pressure and the risks of heart disease. However, goji berries should not be taken with anticoagulant drugs, as they may increase the risk of bleeding. If you are taking anticoagulant drugs, speak to your doctor before adding goji berries to your regular diet.
