Located near the middle of your back, your kidneys are responsible for filtering, water, blood and other waste products. This process must occur prior to elimination of water and waste through urination. Malfunctioning kidneys are unable to properly filter waste, which can cause waste buildup and subsequent health problems. Incorporating healthy foods into your diet can promote healthy kidney function.
Vegetables
Although potassium is vital for maintaining your muscles and heart functions, excessive amounts can prevent your kidneys from correctly processing toxins. Therefore, eating low potassium vegetables are beneficial to maintain kidney health, as they also contain fiber and vitamins, reports Dr. Helena Jackson in "Eating Well for Kidney Health." Ideal vegetables include cabbage, cauliflower, bell peppers, carrots, squash and onions. Avoid rhubarb and spinach if you have calcium oxalate kidney stones.
Fruits
Fruits are beneficial foods to jump start your kidney health. They contain antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals to promote healthy kidney function and protect your body, according to the National Kidney Foundation. Ideal fruits to consume include strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries, oranges, grapefruits, watermelon and cantaloupes. Berries help protect against kidney inflammation, tumor formation and digestion regulation.
Protein
The National Kidney Foundation reports that consuming healthy protein portions help maintain kidney function. Protein is important for promoting cell growth, tissue repair and formation. For best results, choose protein sources with low fat and phosphorus content. These sources include egg whites, chicken breast and low-fat milk. Fish, another healthy option, contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for decreasing kidney inflammation and cholesterol reduction. Tuna, mackerel, salmon, lake trout, sardines, halibut and herring are beneficial fish options.
Water
Drinking water is important since it flushes your body of toxins and helps maintain healthy body functions. In addition, adequate water consumption helps jump start your kidneys by maintaining the correct volume and correct concentration of blood, aids in digestion, regulates blood circulation and stabilizes your body temperature. For optimal kidney functions, MayoClinic.com suggests you drink a minimum amount of 64 oz. of water daily.
