Golfer Nathan Camacho has become one of the sport's top instructors in the San Antonio, Texas, region. He is currently director of instruction at The Dominion Country Club. Camacho has also played in numerous professional tournaments in the South, Southwest and Midwest, competing against some of the biggest names in the sport.
Tournament Play
As a junior player in the early 1990s, Camacho competed in top local events, like the City Junior Golf Championship. In 1999, Camacho competed in a PGA Tour Qualifying School tournament but did not advance. In 2006 U.S. Open qualifying at the San Antonio Country Club, he was one of six players to advance to regional qualifying. At Houston's Lakeside Golf Club, he was one of 32 players playing for two spots. Camacho and PGA Tour stalwarts Tom Kite, Anthony Kim and Steve Elkington were among the pros failing to earn a berth. In 2008, he and fellow instructor Tim Hobby teamed to take third place in the Mizuno Western Chapter Pro-Pro, a PGA Southern Texas Section event.
The Tight Lies Tour
Camacho played on this regional professional tour for several years and finished in the money several times. At the 2001 Community Bank Open in Granbury, Texas, he shot a six-under-par 282 and finished 22nd. At the 2001 Sprint PCS Open in Monroe, Texas, he finished 33rd. At the 2006 Sprint Open in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he fired second-round 67 and finished 52nd.
Adams Pro Golf Series
The Tight Lies Tour evolved into the Adams Golf Pro Tour Series. In 2009, Camacho played in nine events and finished in the money three times. His best finish was a tie for 36th at the Oak Wing Golf Club. He finished 44th at the Beaumont Open and 45th at The Bridges Golf Club. Away from that tour, he missed the cut at the 2009 Southwest Kansas Pro-Am but enjoyed playing the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. "I am amazed that this is a municipal golf course and how good it is," Camacho told the "Garden City (Kansas) Telegram" newspaper. "You put this golf course in San Antonio, and it stands up with any of the public courses they have."
Golf Instruction
Before moving from SilverHorn Golf Club to The Dominion Country Club, Camacho earned "most popular instructor" honors in a 2008 "San Antonio News-Express" reader survey. One of Camacho's pupils at The Dominion, Colin J. Perez, finished in a tie for 10th among 55 competitors in the Boys 6-year-old age bracket in the 2010 U.S. Kids World Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. He shot a 116 for 27 holes over three days. That finish earned Perez an exemption to the 2011 event.
