Topamax is the brand name for topiramate, a prescription medication that your doctor may prescribe for epilepsy or another medical condition, such as migraine headaches. This is a strong medication that can have side effects and interact with other drugs, including weight-loss medicines. Do not take any medication with Topamax without first obtaining a medical recommendation from your doctor.

Topamax

Topamax can have numerous side effects, such as dizziness, depression, mood problems, sleepiness, loss of muscle coordination and vomiting. Taking this medication may increase your risk of developing kidney stones and can cause problems with your speech and concentration. One of the most common side effects is weight loss. This may occur in conjunction with a loss of appetite, a change in the way foods taste, nausea and diarrhea. Taking weight-loss pills at the same time may increase your risk of certain side effects and lead to an excessive and unhealthy weight loss.

Weight-Loss Medications

Although weight-loss medications, including nonprescription formulas, may promote a reduction in body fat, these medications can have several side effects, depending on the type of weight-loss drug you take. Possible side effects include insomnia, agitation, depression, an increase in blood pressure, diarrhea and chronic pain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, topiramate is an investigative drug in regard to its weight-loss properties. Although it is not a standard or medically approved weight-loss remedy, preliminary research indicates this medicine may provide benefits for obese people and those with binge-eating disorders.

Diet

MedlinePlus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, warns against changing your diet or starting a weight-loss program while you are on Topamax. Beginning a ketogenic diet, one that limits carbohydrates and includes fats, may be especially harmful to your health. A ketogenic diet can increase your likelihood of developing kidney stones while you are using Topamax.

Precautions

Although the Topamax drug monograph does not list specific diet pills in the possible drug interactions list, it is important to discuss all drugs you take with your doctor before using them with Topamax. Some weight-loss drugs may help you meet your diet goal, but the overall weight loss is generally minimal and often temporary. Your doctor or nutritionist can provide information regarding healthy weight loss and nutritious diet plans.
