Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that results in severe clinical impairment to your ability to function and your overall sense of well-being. While a number of therapies can help manage symptoms of schizophrenia, some believe in the benefits of alternative or Eastern medical treatments, such as Ayurveda. However, there are few clinical studies to confirm its uses. Talk to your doctor first.
About Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a system of medicine native to India that was developed around 5000 years ago. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Ayurveda may be the oldest healing science. It is based on principles of preventing disease and maintaining balance in the body and mind through the use of specific techniques such as meditation, herbs, yoga, diet, lifestyle changes and other methods. Many Ayurvedic practitioners view psychotic diseases, such as schizophrenia, as an imbalance of certain energies in your body and mind. According to Ayurvedic practitioner David Frawley in his book, "Ayurvedic Healing: A Comprehensive Guide," Ayurvedic remedies for schizophrenia aim to restore balance, through specific herbs, diet and spiritual practices.
Schizophrenia Facts
Schizophrenia affects around 1 percent of the American population, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Symptoms are often debilitating and usually include features such as hallucinations, delusions, thought disorders, emotional problems, social difficulties, a lack of attention of personal hygiene and paranoia. Although schizophrenia is a chronic disease with no known cure, certain treatments, including medication, psychotherapy and social interventions, can help with symptom management. Additionally, some believe in the benefits of alternative treatments like Ayurveda, although there is not enough clinical evidence to support its effectiveness.
Clinical Evidence
A clinical review, published in the October 2007 issue of the "Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews," examined the available data, including all clinical trials comparing Ayurvedic treatments with a placebo or traditional drugs used to treat schizophrenia. The authors found three small studies that provided inconclusive evidence regarding the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments for schizophrenia. However, one study in the review showed that the Ayurvedic herb known as brahmyadiyoga may have some benefit, although the results were largely inconclusive. The study also showed negative side effects associated with the use of this herb, such as vomiting and nausea. There are no additional, significant studies to validate the benefits of Ayurvedic treatments for schizophrenia.
Considerations
While some people believe in the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments, there is little evidence to prove its benefits in the treatment of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that requires medical intervention for symptom management. Inform your doctor or mental health care provider if you are considering using an Ayurvedic remedy. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication unless directed to do so by your doctor.
