It's a tasty beverage that combines three so-called "superfoods." Several companies manufacture pomegranate-raspberry green tea blends; their fruity flavor may be more palatable if you don't like the taste of plain green tea. Unsweetened tea is a good alternative to sugary drinks like soda and juice, but it's not a miracle cure for any condition. However, there are still plenty of good reasons to drink it.
Pomegranate Benefits
Pomegranates contain compounds called antioxidants, which neutralize molecules in your body called free radicals. Unchecked free radicals can damage cells, so antioxidants are said to help protect you against cancer and heart disease. However, other pomegranate health claims may be overstated. Strong research proving they can support prostate health and lower blood pressure, for example, does not exist.
Raspberry Benefits
Raspberries contain a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, including beta carotene, vitamin C, folate, vitamin A, lutein and vitamin K. If you are pregnant, ask your doctor before drinking raspberry tea. While it is a common folk remedy to help with delivery, avoid it during the earlier stages of pregnancy.
Green Tea Benefits
Like pomegranates, green tea contains free radical-neutralizing antioxidants. Drinking three cups of green tea per day may reduce your risk of a heart attack or heart diseases such as atherosclerosis. Green tea has also been shown to have some positive effects against high cholesterol, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, liver disease and tooth decay. Green tea extract may help boost your metabolism and help weight loss.
Considerations
Green tea contains caffeine. If you're sensitive to caffeine, are pregnant or just want to reduce your caffeine consumption, switch to a caffeine-free version. Be aware that instant tea and iced tea mixes often contain added sugar. To get the health benefits without extraneous calories, brew the tea yourself from bags or loose leaves. Green tea blends like "pomegranate raspberry" may contain only small amounts of the fruits or even artificial flavors, so always read the ingredients list and nutrition facts label.
