A hoagie is a built-to-order sandwich originating from Pennsylvania. While there are several different types of hoagies, they are typically an Italian roll filled with various meats, cheeses, oil, vinegar, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, salt and pepper. Because they are long and packed with a multitude of ingredients -- some of them slippery -- hoagies can cause quite the mess and clothes are easily soiled. To avoid a trip to the dry cleaners, exercise caution while eating a hoagie.
Step 1
Place the sandwich on a plate, and keep napkins nearby to clean up any mess you make.
Step 2
Keep the hoagie in the paper it may have come wrapped in to keep the sandwich together while eating. If yours isn't wrapped, tear off a piece of parchment or wax paper that is twice the length as the sandwich, and place the sandwich in the center. Grab the long sides of the paper, and fold them over the sandwich. Pull the short sides into a triangle that folds over the bottom of the sandwich. Tape to keep the paper in place.
Step 3
Begin eating sandwich, and as you inch your way toward the paper, begin tearing the paper off to expose more of the sandwich.
Step 4
Keep holding onto the sandwich, especially if it is not wrapped in paper. Setting down the sandwich makes it more likely to fall apart, and thus more likely to make a mess.
Tips and Warnings
- If preparing a hoagie, make sure the ingredients fit firmly inside the bread to prevent spillage. Use a knife to cut your hoagie into smaller portions to make it easier to eat, or to save the some for later.
