Gymnastics is a physically and mentally demanding sport that requires intense concentration, discipline and total-body strength. Developing these traits give gymnasts a good foundation that is applicable to a wide variety of sports. It makes them particularly well-suited to activities that require a high level of overall conditioning, coordination and mental focus. Although gymnasts are likely to be very fit, they should get adequate training on technique in a new sport to help avoid injury.
Cross-country Skiing
The leap from gym to snowy forest may seem like a long one but, as the book "Cross-Country Skiing" points out, it is an elegant, simple sport that requires coordination, grace and a high level of fitness. Gymnasts already have the base of muscular strength and endurance required for the sport, and should be able to quickly adapt to the technique and cardiovascular demands. Cross-country skiing is non-impact, which makes it good for cross-training or recovering from injuries.
Synchronized Swimming
Based on a combination of swimming, dance and gymnastics, synchronized swimming can be a natural transition for gymnasts. According to "The Sports Book," the essential skills include strength, endurance, flexibility, grace and rhythm -- all of which correlate highly to the skills learned in doing gymnastics. Though most synchronized swimming involves teams of two or more swimmers, there are also competitions for individuals, which may be especially suited to gymnasts who are used to performing solo.
Martial Arts
There is a broad range of martial arts, but they all share characteristics that relate to gymnastics. "Martial Arts: Mind and Body" notes the importance of being able to focus on correct technique, economy of motion, and efficiency. Balance, precision and timing are also crucial to successful martial arts training, which means that gymnasts should be at an advantage thanks to their previous training.
Body Building
Many elements of gymnastics can translate into body building. As noted in "Natural Body Building," the ideal shape for body builders is wide shoulders and a narrow waist, a shape that is common in gymnastics, and which is developed by the upper-body routines of gymnastics. It also encourages the discipline required to intensely develop specific muscle groups, along with close attention to diet and nutrition, which is essential in body building.
