Bestselling author Mark Hyman, M.D., takes a holistic approach to health, seeking to identify and treat the root cause of symptoms. Whether you are seeking to lose weight, help eliminate digestive difficulties or improve your state of mind, Hyman has nutritional guidelines. In his latest book, "The Ultra-Mind Solution," Hymen offers a six-week plan to help initiate the healing process. Almost all foods besides dairy products and gluten-containing grains are permitted -- the catch is that they must be organic and unprocessed, an approach that will likely require more time in the kitchen.

Foods Rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Hyman encourages dieters to choose foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. If you choose to eat red meat, select meats that have been grass fed, as they provide a greater percentage these beneficial fats. You can add omega-3 fatty acids to your diet by consuming flaxseeds, walnuts and wild-caught cold-water fish such as salmon. These foods are emphasized due to their anti-inflammatory properties, which can benefit heart health and prevent strokes. Hyman notes that omega-3 fatty acids can particularly benefit the brain, as they build cell membranes and stimulate new cell growth and neural connections.

Foods Low in Toxins

Foods that are low in toxins include foods that have not been processed, as well as foods that have been grown organically. In "The Ultra-Mind Solution," he advises, "If it has a label, don't eat it." All food colorings, preservatives and other additives are absolutely prohibited. Hyman also warns against toxic fats, which include trans fats, hydrogenated fats, fat substitutes and processed vegetables oils -- even oils normally considered healthy, such as peanut and canola oil. He recommends extra-virgin olive oil or sesame oil instead. Hyman points out that some meat carries a high toxin load, as it contains hormones and antibiotic residues. He notes that organ meats can be toxic as well, as can predatory fish such as tuna and swordfish. When presented with a choice between organic and conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, always choose the organic version if you are following Hyman's plan.

Whole Grains

Minimally processed grains are permitted on Hyman's diet, however, they should be gluten free. Hyman notes that gluten is a common allergen, and can contribute to mental health problems. Gluten-free grains include rice, buckwheat, corn, millet and quinoa, which is a seed that tastes like a grain. You can have oats if they are processed in a facility that does not also process wheat. Although grains are not limited, Hyman advises placing the emphasis on consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables should be the focal point of meals. Hyman encourages dieters to eat foods such as kale, blueberries and colorful red peppers, as these are rich in antioxidants. Broccoli, artichokes, watercress and several other vegetables are noted as being detoxifying foods. Garlic and onions are valuable, Hyman says, because they are anti-inflammatory and can lower cholesterol and blood sugar. He warns not to consume peaches, apples, celery, strawberries, grapes, cherries, lettuce, pears, nectarines and sweet bell peppers unless they have been organically grown, as these foods have been heavily treated with pesticides.
