1. Blow Your Cold Away
A dripping nose is annoying, but it's your body's natural way of eliminating cold-causing bacteria, and when performed correctly, nose-blowing is one of the most effective natural cold remedies. Never sniff drainage back into the nose, but blow often and gently, as blowing too hard can cause an earache. Simply cover one nostril and exhale gently through your nose, repeat with the opposite side and then wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Tea Time
Hot fluids are among the best home remedies for colds, as they help to soothe congestion and calm inflamed tissues of the nose and throat. However, you can make a hot tea which not only has a soothing temperature but also healing ingredients. Cut a large piece of ginger into small pieces and add to a half pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and remove from heat, adding the juice of one fresh lemon. Ginger will help to soothe a cough and upset stomach, while the vitamin C in lemon will help detoxify the body and increase the body's defenses. Additionally, you can add honey with natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties to your tea as a healthy sweetener.
3. A Teaspoon of Turmeric Keeps The Doctor Away
Turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help to soothe a cough and sore throat and to increase nasal drainage and clear congestion. Stir 1 tsp. of fresh turmeric powder into 1 cup of hot milk and drink two or three times a day. This healing drink is especially helpful when taken before bed to soothe nighttime cold symptoms.
4. Good Old Garlic
Garlic is an ancient cold remedy that can be prepared in a variety of ways to soothe your symptoms. Garlic is a natural antiseptic and antispasmodic which helps to "burn" bacteria and viruses in your body. Garlic will clear the respiratory system, flush out toxins and help to break a fever. You can add at least 4 cloves of garlic to any soup or eat the cloves raw. You can take anywhere from 4 to 12 cloves in a day to help knock out a cold fast. Try drinking tomato and parsley juice after eating garlic to help prevent bad breath and soothe the burn caused by eating raw garlic.
5. The Cure for the Common Cold?
Vitamin C is well known for it's cold-fighting abilities and is still theorized to be the cure for the common cold. Begin taking 1000 mg daily of vitamin C at the first sign of cold symptoms and continue throughout the duration. At the very least, vitamin C will help to reduce your symptoms and the length of your cold.
