Junior football is a time to have fun while learning the basic fundamentals and techniques of the game. One of the most important aspects of junior football is learning the important of teamwork. Teamwork involves more than just working together as a team, and it plays an essential role in a team's success at any level. Teaching teamwork in junior football involves a specific process to maximize the learning of each athlete.
Step 1
Teach the players the acronym, T.E.A.M., meaning "Together Everyone Achieves More." This acronym emphasizes the importance of working as a team during every play, whether it is during practice or in a game.
Step 2
Focus on discipline where every player knows his job to help the team win. The discipline helps the team work together to achieve the same goal. Use practices to express the importance of discipline to build teamwork by holding every player accountable for their roles and responsibilities during the plays.
Step 3
Perform drills during practice that promote encouraging and supporting each player. You can use a combination of noncompetitive and competitive drills that focus on fundamentals and skills. Every player should support each teammate to complete the drills.
Step 4
Promote respect among all of the players and coaches. Teamwork extends beyond the players and having respect and confidence in the coaches improves the level of fun along with performance during games.
Step 5
Rotate positions during practices so every player has an opportunity to try different positions. For example, have the running back, quarterback and wide receiver rotate every possession. This emphasizes being a team player by rotating assignments and sharing the football.
