Swimmer's ear is an infection in the outer ear canal brought on by water that remains in the ear after swimming. Symptoms of swimmer's ear may include itching, redness, drainage, pain, swelling, fever and loss of hearing. Homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine, uses natural remedies to treat illness. Some homeopathic treatments may bring relief to swimmer's ear; however, consult with your doctor before trying alternative medicine.

Pain Relief

If you have swimmer's ear, but are unable to make it to the doctor quickly, you can place a heating pad on your ear to relieve the pain. There are also some natural products available over the counter to help treat swimmer's ear. They typically include homeopathic medicines such as calcarea, belladonna, sulphur and chamomilla and usually come in the form of drops. Use up to 10 drops in the affected ear three times a day for up to 7 days. If you do not see improvement within seven days, or experience a fever, see you doctor immediately. While using alternate treatment methods, it is important to keep the ear clean and free of water.

Natural Antibiotics

If you have swimmer's ear, it means you have an infection. Western doctors will most likely prescribe a prescription antibiotic, but according to alternative medicine author Raje Airey, there are natural ways to clear an infection. Vitamin C is a natural antibiotic and can boost your immune system. Take 200 - 500 milligrams a day until the infection is gone. Other natural antibiotics often used in homeopathy include zinc and garlic.

Natural Treatments

Herbs can be used as a homeopathic treatment for swimmer's ear. One remedy is to grind a pound of holy basil leaves until you get a liquid extract. Then place a small amount of the extract in your ear. You can also buy holy basil in extract form. Another remedy is to slice an onion in half and place it over your ear while you are lying down. Leave it there for an hour and a half. If you still have to swim, put a few drops of mineral oil in your ear before doing so, to prevent the infection from getting worse.

Prevention

To prevent swimmer's ear, clean your ears regularly and keep them dry. Before you go swimming, you can also mix one part vinegar and one part rubbing alcohol and pour one teaspoon of the mixture into each ear. Finally, if you think you are getting an infection in your ear, and especially if it seems to be worsening, see your doctor.
