After a Thanksgiving feast, leftover gravy is often relegated, with good intentions, to a plastic container in the refrigerator, where it quickly spoils. However, when stored correctly, leftover gravy can flavor broths and slow-cooker meals for many months. Rather than sticking leftover gravy in the refrigerator, freeze it into serving-size cubes.

Step 1

Wait for the gravy to cool, then whisk it for one minute to smooth out any chunks or film that has appeared on the top.

Step 2

Spray an ice cube tray with cooking spray and spoon gravy to fill each compartment.

Step 3

Place the tray in the freezer and leave it there at least 24 hours.

Step 4

Write the date the gravy was prepared on the outside of a freezer storage bag.

Step 5

Remove the tray from the freezer and carefully invert into the freezer storage bag. The cooking spray allows the cubes to slide out cleanly. Seal the bag and place the gravy cubes back in the freezer.

Step 6

Remove one or more gravy cubes as needed for future meals and dishes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Frozen gravy lasts two to three months in the freezer, compared to a shelf life of about two days in the refrigerator.
