NutriSystem Advanced uses the same basic NutriSystem program with a few additions to make it healthier and easier to follow, according to Diets in Review. The basic tenets of the NutriSystem program remain the same, although the Advanced version gives you new ingredients, new foods and new color-coding of meals.
Basics
NutriSystem Advanced works the same as the original program. You first select a 28-day plan that suits your gender, age and menu preferences; enroll to receive NutriSystem food delivered to your home; then follow a daily diet that combines NutriSystem foods and foods from your supermarket as per the meal planner you'll receive. The meal planner outlines the food you can eat each day of the program while an included results kit helps gauge your results. The program also comes with access to online weight loss trackers and the online community portion of NutriSystem's website.
New Ingredients
Fiber and fatty acids are two additions to NutriSystem Advanced, both contained in the two new ingredients of OmegaSol and NutriSol, according to Diets in Review. OmegaSol and NutriSol contain natural, soluble fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, components beneficial to your heart and digestive system. Soluble fiber can help decrease your glucose and blood cholesterol levels while providing a feeling of fullness. Omega-3 fatty acids can help your heart health by slightly lowering your blood pressure, slowing the buildup of plaque that leads to hardened arteries and reducing your risk of abnormal heart rhythms, heart attack and strokes if you suffer from cardiovascular disease, according to MayoClinic.com.
New Colors, Foods and Planner
NutriSystem Advanced contains 60 new foods on the menu, for a total of 120 different foods from which to choose. Color-coding on the meals is another addition, making it more convenient to organize and select foods at a glance. A new personalized meal planner is also part of the Advanced version of the program, although Diets in Review does not make it clear how the advanced meal planner differs from the original. NutriSystem Advanced also comes with an exercise DVD, although it is also unclear if that is part of the original program's package.
Considerations
NutriSystem is generally an effective yet expensive program due to the specialized food you have to purchase. The NutriSystem website makes no mention of the overall cost of its programs, although it does note meals can cost as little as $11 per day but does not say which type of meals that covers. Seven versions of both the original and NutriSystem Advanced program are available, based on gender, age, eating preferences and whether or not you have diabetes. While NutriSystem can be effective while you are following the plan, which automatically counts your calories and controls your portion, once you complete the 28-day program, maintaining healthy eating habits is up to you.
