Side Effects of Fortovase

Fortovase is a medication used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS). The Physicians Desktop Reference explains that, in combination with other drugs, Fortovase is capable of blocking an enzyme that is needed for the spread of the HIV within the body. As with any medication, Fortovase has the potential for side effects.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, even the most common side effects should be reported to a doctor if they are persistent or become bothersome. These effects include anxiety, blurry vision, bronchitis, erectile dysfunction, constipation, diarrhea, dry lips, dry skin, gas, headache, indigestion, appetite changes, nausea, sweating in the night, insomnia, upset stomach, changes in taste, fatigue, vomiting, warts and unusual weight gain.

Severe Side Effects

Some users may experience one of many serious side effects listed by Drugs.com. These possible side effects include back pain, blood in the stools, increase or decrease in body fat, pain in the chest, confusion, coughing up blood, darkened urine, trouble urinating, dizziness, excessive thirst, excessive hunger, excessive urination, increased heart rate, fever, flu-like symptoms, fruity scented breath, itching, coordination trouble, pneumonia, seizures, shortness of breath, gradual drowsiness, pain in the abdomen, gum tenderness or bleeding, thoughts of self-harm, unusual vaginal discharge or odor, strange weakness, white lesions in the mouth and jaundice. The Physicians Desktop Reference also suggests possible serious side effects including fungal infection or "buffalo hump" on the back.

Allergic Reaction

Individuals who have an allergy to Fortovase might experience mild to severe symptoms of allergic reaction. Drugs.com warns individuals to seek medical treatment if these occur. Allergic reaction can include rash, hives, trouble breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the face, swelling of the lips or swelling of the tongue.
