Weight Loss With Knox Gelatin

Knox gelatin is a low-calorie baking ingredient that is used to thicken and solidify foods such as gummy candy. You can also add flavoring to Knox gelatin to make sweet gelatin desserts. Knox gelatin is low in calories and contains other nutritional characteristics that may make it beneficial weight loss. The gelatin alone, however, won't produce weight loss, so you'll still need to consume a reduced-calorie diet to lose weight.

Low in Calories

Knox gelatin is low in calories, as each packet of the food contains just 25 calories. This amount comprises only about 1 percent of the daily suggested intake of 2,000. Knox gelatin can be helpful for weight loss because it would not take long to burn off the calories -- three minutes of swimming laps or five minutes of water aerobics could burn 25 calories.

Rich Protein Content

Knox gelatin can be a good choice for weight loss because it contains 6 g of protein per serving. While protein is vital for building and repairing your body's tissues, it can also aid in weight loss. Research from the May 2008 edition of "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" notes that protein induces a higher rate of calorie-burning than other nutrients and is more satiating.

Lack of Fat

Knox gelatin contains no fat, and this can make it a good choice for weight loss. Dietary fat contains nine calories per gram, so fatty foods contain more calories but less volume than foods without fat. Additionally, research from the May 2001 issue of "International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders" notes that fat is less filling and produces less of a calorie-burning effect than other nutrients, so limiting fat intake on a diet can facilitate weight loss.

Lack of Carbohydrates

Knox gelatin contains no carbohydrates, which can be beneficial if you're on a low-carbohydrate diet. Knox gelatin is unflavored, however, so you may be adding carbohydrate-rich flavoring to the food when preparing certain recipes. In this case, you may wish to use reduced-calorie sugar substitutes.

Low in Sodium

Knox gelatin can be helpful for dieting because it is low in sodium, with 15 mg per packet. This amount comprises less than 1 percent of the daily suggested intake of 2,300 mg. High levels of sodium can be detrimental for dieting because it causes water retention.
