As anyone who has taken up the sport of boxing knows, it takes a significant level of commitment to get involved in the sport. The reasons are obvious. You are getting into the ring against an opponent whose main goal is to hit you with hard punches. In order to protect yourself, you have to make a full commitment to acquire the skills needed to excel at your sport. That commitment can lead to significant personal growth.

Courage

It takes a significant amount of courage to get into the ring and fight regularly as an amateur. You cannot step into the ring and fight with fear. If you are afraid of getting struck by an opponent's fist, you won't be trying to win. Instead, you will be trying not to lose. You won't see or sense an opening when one comes up and you will be a fraction of a second behind. Courage changes your outlook in everything you do. If you have it, you won't be afraid of failure. You will take the steps necessary -- inside and outside of the ring -- to do the things you need to succeed.

Overcoming Adversity

All fighters know adversity. When you step into the ring, there will be times when your opponent hits you with hard punches and you will experience pain and difficulty. Boxers learn how to handle these moments by hanging on and then gradually rebuilding their stature and turning their situation around. Overcoming adversity demonstrates character and patience.

Conditioning

When you step into the ring, your goal is to hit your opponent and hurt him with punches. His goal is to do the same to you. In order to have a chance to do this, you have to be in superior condition. That means excellent cardiovascular condition, having notable physical strength and excellent coordination and timing. This takes a commitment in the gym to work at your conditioning as well as your boxing skills.

Work Ethic

This may be the most vital of all the categories needed to succeed at boxing. You have to work hard to learn the skills needed to box. You have to work hard to get in shape needed to box. You have to work hard to study the top boxers in the game and learn which style best suits your physical attributes. Finally, you have to work hard to develop a gameplan in the ring that will lead to your success. All of these are characteristics that lead to personal growth outside of the ring.
