Cajun shrimp boil is more than just a seafood dish, it is a Southern tradition. It is also called low country boil and takes less than an hour to cook. Boiling Cajun shrimp starts with boiling water in a large pot. From there the ingredients are simply added one after the other. The usual sequence adds the vegetables first followed by the seafood and then the seasoning. When done, you peel the shrimps and serve with a sauce or corn and potato.
Step 1
Fill a large pot with water but leave 6 inches from the top to allow for the ingredients.
Step 2
Add the oil, vinegar, garlic, shrimp and crab boil, salt, bay leaves, sweet onion and lemon halves.
Step 3
Bring the water to boil, and keep it boil for 10 minutes. Turn down the heat.
Step 4
Add the baby red potatoes. Cook for another 10 minutes.
Step 5
Add the sweet corn on the cob. Bring the water to boil, and let it cook for five minutes.
Step 6
Add the shrimp. Boil for five minutes until they turn pink and rise to the top.
Step 7
Turn off the heat and let the boil sit for five minutes.
Step 8
Drain the boil in a colander. Serve the Cajun shrimp with your favorite sauce.
Tips and Warnings
- If the water boils over during cooking, turn off the heat and allow the water to settle before turning it up to a lower temperature. Don't let the boiled shrimp stay in the water too long after turning off the heat as overcooked shrimp are hard to peel.
