When families are lucky enough to have a dedicated kids' play room in their home, the area should be a space where imaginations can run free. The space should be designed in cheerful colors, with lots of art supplies and toys to choose from. There are many fun ideas to help design a creative space, to ensure the play room is utilized to the fullest.

Wall Stickers

Wall stickers, such as Wallies brand, are an easy, attractive way to decorate a room. Wall stickers will stick to a wall very well, but are easily peeled off if needed. There are thousands of designs to choose from, even huge murals and borders. Pick a kids favorite theme, like flowers, cars, space, rainbows, animals, princesses, dinosaurs, or learning themes like ABC's.

Play Stage

Nothing brings a child imagination to life like acting. A play stage will need a good sized area, at least six feet out from the wall, along the length of the wall used. The floor does not need to be elaborate or permanent, a simple throw rug will do. Hang curtains from the ceiling with ceiling hooks, that are available at any hardware store. Curtain hooks can be used to hold the curtain open. Keep a large chest of dress up clothes and props near the stage.

Outdoor Play Equipment

A play room can be a great place for kids to burn off some energy when the weather keeps them inside. Kids will love the idea of having an inside park. Set up a small play structure or slides. Mini trampolines are great for physical exercise, and are super fun.

A "Sand" Box

Sand box play is fun, and great for fine motor skill development. Use either a kiddie pool or a store bought sand box. Of course, sand inside the home is an awful idea, but many alternatives can be used. Try dry lentils, beans, or rice. Polished, colored rocks that are sold at pet stores for use in fish tanks are a nice looking, fun choice. Buckets and little shovels can be used.

Television Without Cable

If kids have many channel choices, they might end up watching television rather than playing. But educational video games are a fun treat for kids to play now and then. Special kids' movies might be viewed in the room as well.

Lots of Storage

Kids play best when a room is organized, so they can concentrate on one game at a time. Large shelves are good for board games and books, but should always be bolted to the wall to avoid accidents. Little cubbyholes and drawers are great for dolls, art supplies and cars.

Lego Table

Boys and girls alike usually love to build. A table specifically for Lego use is great for encouraging play. Since kids will not have to pick up the Legos, large cities and castles can be built on over time. Small chairs should be placed around the table so kids are comfortable.

Art Area

An art area in a kids' playroom will allow for creative expression. Place an old sheet under the art table so kids will not have to worry about making a mess. Play dough, paint, crayons, scissors and glue should be organized and easily accessible, as well as many paper choices.
