Milk thistle, silybum marianum, is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean and now grown world-wide. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years to promote liver health. Extracts from the seeds are converted into capsules, extracts, powders and tinctures for oral administration. Silymarin, found in the seed extract, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory uses. Consult with a medical professional before using any herb or supplement.
Liver Health
Studies have mixed results on the effects of milk thistle for liver health. However, milk thistle may aid liver health and increase the length of life for those who have cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis or alcohol-induced liver disease. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties assist with decreasing oxidation and inflammation associated with these diseases.
Cancer
Silymarin may have anti-cancer effects. It may slow or stop the growth of breast, cervical and prostate cancer cells and reduce blood flow to tumors.
Other Potential Benefits
Milk thistle can be a remedy for poisoning caused by deathcap mushroom, amanita phalloides, and it can maintain liver function if this mushroom is consumed. Milk thistle may lower cholesterol levels. Blood sugar may be controlled and insulin resistance reduced for those with type 2 diabetes and cirrhosis. Indigestion may be aided by taking milk thistle.
Dosage
Dosages have been studied in relation to adults taking silymarin. Effective doses may be 230 mg to 600 mg per day divided into two to three doses. There have been no studies related to children. Talk to a physician before taking any herb or supplement.
Precautions
Side effects may include upset stomach and diarrhea. Touching milk thistle plant may cause a skin rash. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with a history of hormone-related cancers, such as uterine and prostate cancer, should avoid taking milk thistle. Milk thistle may interact with certain medications, including anti-psychotics, phenytoin, also called Dilantin, and halothane. It also may interact with medications for allergies and cholesterol, and anti-anxiety, blood thinner and some cancer medications. Always work with a doctor when taking any supplement or herb.
