Sunflower oil is known for its light taste, health benefits and versatility in the kitchen. The oil is available in three versions: non-hydrogenated linoleic acid, monounsaturated high oleic acid and NuSun. NuSun is a new type of sunflower oil with a modified fatty acid structure designed for optimal health benefits and superior performance while remaining free of trans fat.

High in Vitamin E

Sunflower oil contains more vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, than any other vegetable oil, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Vitamin E is involved in a variety of bodily functions and helps protect against many inflammatory conditions, such as osteoarthritis, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Vitamin E deficiency is associated with immune dysfunction, peripheral neuropathy, retinopathy and ataxia. The Office of Dietary Supplements notes that a single tablespoon of sunflower oil contains 5.6 mg of vitamin E, or 28 percent of the daily value.

Low in Saturated Fat

As a mix of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, sunflower oil contains very low levels of saturated fat, making it good for heart health, and sunflower oil contains no trans fat, the type of fat linked to heart disease and stroke. Also, oils high in linoleic acid can lower LDL levels and decrease risk of heart disease, according to the Cropwatch website of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Resistant to Heat

Sunflower oil works well at extremely high cooking temperatures and helps food remain healthier and fresher for longer. Because the oil is so versatile in the kitchen and is ideal for frying foods, it can replace other, less healthy oils that may contribute to heart disease and other health problems.

Skin and Hair Benefits

Sunflower oil is a natural emollient that lubricates and moisturizes the skin and hair. On the skin, the oil works to retain moisture and treat dry skin. When applied to the skin of premature babies with underdeveloped skin, it creates a protective barrier that prevents infection, according to a study published in "The Lancet" in March 2005. This study showed that infants who received a daily skin treatment with sunflower oil were 41 percent less likely to experience an infection while in the hospital. Sunflower oil in hair-care products works to nourish and protect the hair to prevent breakage and dryness.
