Premenstrual syndrome, also known as PMS, includes various symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, food cravings and acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, an estimated three out of four menstruating women experience PMS. Although research is conflicting, a 2002 study by Loren Cordain, a professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University, found that the typical western diet, which is generally high in processed foods, can also contribute to a higher rate of acne. The nutrients found in cucumbers and other fresh fruits and vegetables can help reduce acne in women suffering from PMS.
Step 1
Eat raw slices of unpeeled cucumber as a snack. When suffering from PMS, enjoy cucumber slices throughout the day. Be sure to eat your cucumber without salt. The Mayo Clinic recommends avoiding foods high in salt when suffering from PMS in order to prevent bloating.
Step 2
Make a cucumber salad. Mix unpeeled cucumber slices with vinegar and herbs such as dill, basil, garlic or cilantro. You can also make a creamy version by adding yogurt to your cucumbers.
Step 3
Make a cucumber sandwich. Combine cucumber slices with butter or low-fat cream cheese. Add any seasoning or herbs to the sandwich. Use whole wheat bread instead of the traditional white bread to help prevent PMS acne.
Step 4
Drink cucumber juice to help PMS acne. Add cucumber slices to a large pitcher of water and allow the cucumbers to soak in the water for approximately one hour. The water will retain the nutrients from the cucumbers such as vitamin A and chlorophyll that help reduce PMS acne. Remove the cucumber slices and drink the remaining water.
