Constipation is a common digestive problem that happens when you have significantly fewer bowel movements than is normal for you. Laxative teas use herbs that promote bowel movements to treat constipation. Many teas marketed for constipation use senna or cascara sagrada -- two common herbs with medicinal properties that stimulate bowel movement. Consult with your doctor before taking laxative teas.

Senna

Senna is a perennial plant with a long history of laxative use. The active compounds are called sennosides. It is considered a stimulant laxative because it irritates your intestinal lining, which promotes bowel movement. It is used as an ingredient in laxative teas and is also available as a solo tea without other ingredients. Do not use senna laxative teas for longer than a week. Doing so can cause dependence, according to Drugs.com.

Cascara sagrada

Cascara sagrada is a medicinal shrub. The dry bark is used in laxative teas. Historically, Native Americans used it for constipation. The active compounds are called anthraquinone glycosides. Like sennosides, these compounds stimulates intestinal contractions, which promotes bowel movement. The tea is commonly taken two to three times daily, but like senna, do not use it for more than a week.

Staying Regular

Dietary fiber and adequate fluid intake play a role in bowel regularity, according to Mayoclinic.com. Dehydration, illness and certain medications can cause constipation. Illness is another factor that can effect your bowels. Drink at least 8 cups of water daily to assure hydration. You need more fluids if you are physically active and losing water through sweat. Get enough fiber in your diet from foods such as whole wheat bread, lentils, oat bran, fruits and vegetables. Fiber provides bulk for your stool and promotes regularity.

Safety and Precautions

Take laxative teas as the label directs, after consulting your doctor. Do not drink laxative teas if you have an inflammatory bowel disease, as it can worsen your condition. Do not drink stimulant laxative teas if you are pregnant, they have the capacity to stimulate your uterus. Cascara Sagrada can stimulate your gallbladder. Do not take laxative teas that have cascara sagrada if you have gallbladder problems. Laxative teas may interact with your medications. Talk to your doctor if you are currently prescribed medicine.
