The use of added sugar has many side effects. Dr. Nancy Appleton, a clinical nutritionist, tells NaturalNews.com that sugar can impair the structure of DNA, contribute to diabetes, heart disease and cancer, decrease energy levels and reduce your body's defenses to bacterial infection, among many other things. Thus, reduce or eliminate added sugars can be good for your health. When it comes to eating a sugarless diet, however, you must remember that sugar naturally occurs in fruit, milk and other carbohydrates, and it can be virtually impossible to eliminate sugar completely.

Step 1

Do not drink sweetened beverages. This includes soda, milk and juice. Sodas and energy drinks were ranked as the fourth-highest source of calorie intake by adults by the U.S. government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010.

Step 2

Stop eating desserts. This includes, candy, pies, cakes, cookies and the like. Dairy desserts were the 10th-highest source of calorie intake by adults, the Dietary Guidelines note.

Step 3

Remove all added sugar sources from your home. This includes table sugar, maple syrup, agave and honey. The only added sweetner that is acceptable for a sugarless diet is stevia, which, NaturalNews.com explains, is actually a sweet-tasting herb.

Step 4

Read food labels of all food products you buy to check for the various sugar sources. This includes things as obvious as all types of sugars and syrups and additives not so obvious, such as maltodextrin and anything that ends in -ose.
