An estimated 20 percent of women will experience a urinary tract infection, or UTI, at least once during their lifetimes, according to the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services. UTIs are less common in men for reasons that are not fully understood as of 2011. They are caused by bacterial infections in the urinary system, most commonly the urethra, bladder or kidneys. Though natural home remedies such as vinegar can be useful in preventing UTIs, once infection is established seek professional medical advice.

Most Likely Sufferers

People most at risk of a UTI include those whose urinary flow is obstructed, such as men with enlarged prostates, anyone suffering from kidney stones or anyone using a catheter. Blocking the flow of urine can lead to bacterial infection. Those with abnormalities of the urinary tract can also be at risk. Anyone with a disorder that suppresses or changes the immune system such as diabetes can be more susceptible to infections of the urinary tract, as may sexually active women.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Raw ACV is unpasteurized and retains the nutritious benefits of the apples from which it is made, including vitamins A and C, which may help boost the immune system. Its two fermentation processes also produce enzymes and important nutrients such as magnesium and potassium. Clear vinegar has none of the benefits of raw organic apple cider vinegar because it is overprocessed, according to Dr. Edward Group, writing for the Global Healing Center.

Vinegar and Bacteria

ACV contains acetic acid, a natural antiseptic that may help deter or destroy unwanted bacteria in the urinary tract. It also contains malic acid, which is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. In the 20 percent of chronic sufferers of UTIs, it is usually found that subsequent bouts are caused by varying strains of bacteria, indicating separate infections.

UTIs and Acidity

According to Dr. Earl Mindell, registered pharmacist and author of "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar," UTIs seem more likely to occur when the urinary tract is less acidic. This can happen as a result of hormone changes related to pregnancy and menopause. Increasing the acidity of your urine can help prevent or destroy bacterial growth. Because ACV is high in potassium, an important mineral for maintaining acid-alkaline balance, it may be useful in the prevention and treatment of UTIs.

Dosage and Warnings

According to the UKCider website you should take one part AVC to four parts water. Add a lttle honey to taste if you wish. Do not take ACV to treat a UTI without consulting your doctor first. Most UTIs require antibiotic treatment and the vitamin C in ACV can interfere with the effectiveness of certain prescribed antibiotics. The most effective way to treat a UTI naturally, in conjunction with antibiotics, is to drink plenty of water to help flush out harmful bacteria.
