The eastern rosella (Platycercus eximius) is an Australian parrot from the country's eastern region. The bird's coat is a colorful feather quilt that starts with a red head, develops into white cheeks and continues down to the tail's tip, alternating from green to blue to yellow. The eastern rosella likes a vegetarian diet that isn't that much different from what you might eat.
Seeds
Eastern rosellas eat sunflower, safflower, millet and canary seeds. Canary seed comes from the canary grass, a coarse, upright plant birdseed producers cultivate for its commercial value. A February 2010 news report on KVUE Television explored the potential benefits of canary seeds to humans. According to the report, canary seeds are used in homeopathy to treat hypertension, high cholesterol and heart problems. But science has yet to prove these claims. KVUE also cited research in Canada that linked canary seeds to esophageal cancer in humans. As one naturopath doctor interviewed for the report says, consult a professional health-care provider for help treating any condition. The other three seeds are thoroughly incorporated in people's diets as snacks, oils and cooked dishes.
Seed Sprouts
Seed sprouts are the very young shoots of plants. An Internet marketer of bird supplies says the sprouts are healthier than the seeds because they are lower in fat. The sprouts are also high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and proteins. Breeding and molting eastern rosellas can use the extra nutrition. Legume and other seed sprouts have long been a part of people's diets, who eat them raw, stir-fried and in soups.
Fruits
The eastern rosella eats soft and hard fruit such as mangos, apples, blackberries and oranges. Fruits are sources of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, sugars and fiber. Apples, for instance, have vitamins A and C as well as iron, potassium and calcium. Fruits are one of the bases of people's health, with the Food and Drug Administration campaigning for you to eat them daily.
Vegetables
Cucumbers, sweet potatoes and greens such as kale are vegetables that eastern rosellas enjoy. The same foods could be in your diet. Like fruits, vegetables provide vitamins, proteins and minerals, not to mention much-needed calories. They give the birds enough fuel to fly and be as active as they like to be.
