King of the Court, a simple volleyball game, works well on small courts or as a team practice drill. It teaches players how to work together during a volley, develop an ability to predict ball trajectory, hit the ball strategically and identify weaknesses in opponents. Also, players learn to adjust strategies quickly to handle their opposition's different sets. In its basic form, King of the Court requires three teams of three players, but you can adjust team sizes or make other modifications as necessary.
Step 1
Direct two sets of players to take up positions on either side of the court, just as they would for a typical volleyball game.
Step 2
Flip a coin to decide who serves first.
Step 3
Volley the ball in line with normal volleyball rules until a team wins the point. For example, no player may make consecutive hits. Also, if a team hits the ball more than three times before returning it over the net, it loses the point.
Step 4
Allow the team waiting on the sidelines to replace the one that just lost a point. The team that won the point remains King of the Court, and stays in the game until it loses a point.
Step 5
Allow the newcomers to serve the ball to start a new volley.
Step 6
Keep track of points to determine which team most often reigns as King of the Court.
Tips and Warnings
- If one team dominates the game, limit teams to remain King of the Court for no more than three consecutive volleys. After that, the team on the sidelines with the fewest points should become King of the Court, which helps distribute playing time equally.
