UTIs, also known as urinary tract infections, are a very common type of infection that can occur in the urinary tract at any point. The only real treatment for them is antibiotics, yet many people tout home remedies, including the use of apple cider vinegar, to combat these painful infections. If you think you have a UTI, see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Defining UTIs
Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria from the digestive tract enters the urinary tract through the urethra. The bacteria can attach itself to the lining at any part of the urinary tract and may cause a whole host of unpleasant symptoms, including burning or painful urination, pelvic pain, frequent urination, increased urgency, and foul smelling urine, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse.
The Effects of Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is a common item found in the kitchen and may aid in preventing UTIs. Since it is so acidic, it can help maintain an acidic environment in the bladder. This prevents bacteria from attaching, as bacteria thrive in an alkaline environment, according to Dr. Earl Mindell, author of "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar." It is best to avoid drinking it when you already have a UTI, however, as the acidity can inflame the urinary tract and worsen the symptoms of the infection, according to Dr. Marianne Legato, author of "What Women Need to Know."
UTI Treatment Options
Treating UTIs requires a visit to the doctor's office or urgent care center. You need a prescription for antibiotics to kill the bacteria. No home remedies like drinking apple cider vinegar will help in this regard.
A Potential Preventive
Though apple cider vinegar won't treat a UTI, it may help to prevent them. By diluting apple cider vinegar with water and drinking it daily, you can keep your bladder acidic and prevent bacteria from flourishing there. Also, to help prevent an infection, drink plenty of water each day, wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from entering the urethra, don't resist the urge to urinate, and cleanse the genital area prior to sex, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse.
