The Fat Flush Plan
The fat flush plan has two phases, either of which can be done vegetarian or vegan. The classic Fat Flush program concentrates on using foods to detoxify the liver and lymph nodes, while the The Fat Flush for Life takes a seasonal approach to weight loss, including a vegetarian phase in the autumn plan. Both plans advise avoiding sugar, caffeine and trans fats, which Gittleman says make the liver work harder and can cause it not to process fats as efficiently.
Vegetarian Options on Fat Flush
Gittleman includes many vegetarian and vegan recipes, such as vegetarian lasagna. Fat flush meal plans do include animal proteins in the meal plans, but Gittleman makes specific recommendations for vegetarian and vegan substitutions. You could also simply choose to follow the fall portion of the Fat Flush for Life program, which is vegetarian. This portion of the Fat Flush for Life program is not specifically recommended by Gittleman for the entire year but the principles and diet portion of the autumn program are similar to the recommendations that Gittleman makes for vegetarians, like avoiding soy-based proteins in favor of vegetables.
Gittleman's Advice for Eating Vegetarian on Fat Flush
Gittleman is an advocate of vegetarian eating, and she claims that people on the program can and should go vegetarian. She advises avoiding processed foods and sugar when eating vegetarian, focusing on plant-based proteins instead. She recommends that ovo-lacto vegetarians consume eggs, light yogurt and light cheeses and that all types of vegetarians and vegans strive to balance the copper and zinc in their bodies to allow the thyroid to function correctly. Many nonmeat foods and beverages such as soy-based foods are high in copper, which may overload the thyroid, according to Gittleman.
Benefits of Vegetarian Fat Flush
Vegetarians weigh less and live longer on average, according to Gittleman. In addition, plant-based proteins are very effective in maintaining a healthy lifestyle because they are high in fiber and lower in fat. Plant-based proteins support thyroid function and boost metabolism, which are important components of the fat flush plan. In addition, eating a vegetarian or vegan diet is less expensive than eating a diet that includes meat.
